Florence is not only a city of art, beauty, and the Renaissance. Beyond the marble perfection of its churches and the golden glow of its palazzi lies another Florence — one that is secret, mysterious, and unseen.

Beneath its cobblestones, behind its frescoed walls, and within its centuries-old courtyards, the city hides a labyrinth of legends, wandering spirits, and inexplicable stories whispered through generations.

It’s a Florence that never appears in guidebooks or postcards — a shadowy reflection of the city’s luminous surface. Every stone seems to hold a memory, every corner a superstition, every palace a secret. Here, beauty and mystery coexist, bound together by time and imagination.

To celebrate this lesser-known soul of the city, the new The James Suite Hotel has turned these enigmas into a sensorial experience unlike any other. Its bar menu, Thirteen Mysteries, is a journey through Florence’s hidden past, where each cocktail is inspired by one of the city’s most haunting or fascinating tales. The mixologists have gathered stories that drift between folklore and history — the kind of tales told in hushed tones at dusk, when the Arno turns silver and the city begins to dream.

The first of these mysteries is perhaps the most poignant: “The Always-Open Window of Palazzo Grifoni.”

In the heart of Piazza Santissima Annunziata, a window in the elegant Palazzo Grifoni has remained open for centuries. The legend dates back to the Renaissance, when a young woman stood there every day, waiting for her husband to return from war. He never did. Yet her devotion endured beyond life itself. When she died, her grieving family tried to close the window, but unexplained phenomena — books flying off shelves, strange noises echoing through the rooms — forced them to leave it open forever.

To this day, the window remains ajar, a symbol of eternal love and infinite waiting. Passersby still glance up as they cross the square, sensing something ineffable — the faint breath of a story that refuses to die.

Every drink is a liquid clue, a modern tribute to Florence’s most obscure and captivating narratives. Sipping them feels like unlocking a hidden door — one that leads away from the Renaissance masterpieces and toward the city’s darker, dreamlike dimension, where history, myth, and imagination intertwine.

Because Florence, after all, is not only a museum of light. It is also a city of shadows — and those who dare to look beyond its beauty may find that its mysteries are just as intoxicating.

Room rates start from €600 in double occupancy.
