Très leches, meaning three milks, is most traditionally a sponge cake soaked in evaporated milk, condensed milk, and whole milk.

It’s popular in much of Latin America and has been catching on with more consumers in the United States for a while as Americans’ love of Latin flavors and combinations continues to grow. Très Leches is also being seen in new ways, such as in cheesecake, or as a sauce to dip churros in. Chocolate and fruit-enhanced versions are appearing as well.

Market research firm Datassential reports that très leches is found on 4.2% of U.S. menus, up 15% over the past four years. Not surprisingly, it is best known among Hispanic consumers, but it also has high recognition in the Western states and among Millennials.

Click through the gallery to learn more about this Flavor of the Week and see how one restaurant is using très leches on its menu.
