Shifting search preferences among younger users and regulatory scrutiny are key challenges for the search giant

At The Phocuswright Conference, Lorraine Sileo, senior analyst and founder of Phocuswright Research, questioned whether Google’s position is threatened as technology evolves and disrupts retail and search. Industry leaders joined her on a panel titled “Travel’s Tech-Driven Retail Revolution” to share their thoughts.

  • Kristen Dalton, president of Tripadvisor, said she thinks Google is well-positioned to play a “really compelling role” in generative search. But Dalton doesn’t think the doors are closed to competition;
  • “They [Google] are a formidable player,” said Noreen Henry, chief revenue officer at Sojern. “They’re going to be there all the time. But I think this moment opens up opportunities for others;”
  • Pablo Delgado, CEO of Mirai, said he feels that Google “has never been threatened like this” in the last 20 years or so. And it’s not just AI that makes you think Google might be feeling some pressure.
