The Waldorf=Astoria Collection

Waldorf Astoria New York is more than just a building; it’s an iconic symbol of New York City’s glamour and ambition. Long before towering skyscrapers filled Manhattan’s skyline, Waldorf Astoria New York stood as a first-of-its-kind luxury hotel that welcomed presidents, royalty, and Hollywood legends through its grand bronze doors and set the benchmark for hospitality.

When the hotel moved from its Fifth Avenue location to today’s Park Avenue home in 1931, Waldorf Astoria New York was the tallest and largest hotel in the world. This Art Deco property gleamed with shimmering ballrooms, awe-inspiring art, and a dazzling lobby designed to impress. Much of this design inspiration can be traced back to the hotel’s visionary, Lucius Boomer, who believed that the building should serve as a collection of unique spaces, each telling its own story. And in the nearly a century since its Park Avenue opening, that legacy has been kept alive, and continued to evolve, under Hilton’s thoughtful stewardship.

Today, Dr. Mark Young, director of the Hospitality Archives at the University of Houston, works to preserve the heritage of this renowned building. He maintains a collection of photographs, letters, and artifacts that chronicle the history of Conrad Hilton’s ownership of Waldorf Astoria New York, as well as the fascinating role this important landmark has played in shaping the identity of New York City.

The hotel’s story is one that is still being written as it undergoes a meticulous restoration process. In 2017, Waldorf Astoria New York closed its doors for a top to bottom renovation, transforming from 1,400 guest rooms to 375 guest rooms and introducing 372 residences as part of Waldorf Astoria Residences New York. As part of the restoration, craftsmen have been hard at work, bringing back to life the art, metalwork and plasterwork in the heritage spaces throughout the building while preparing the hotel for its new era.

“This is what every other hotel will be measured against. It’s gone way beyond just the metrics of the hospitality industry,” Dr. Young says of the revitalization. “The Greatest of Them All, the Waldorf Astoria.”

Now, Waldorf Astoria New York is preparing to open its doors, and it continues to stand out as both an exceptional piece of history and a shining beacon of the future. Learn more about this magnificent icon in this video, in which Dr. Young shares how Waldorf Astoria New York became a cornerstone of New York City culture and explores why this unparalleled hotel will usher in a new era atop the global hospitality stage.
