Accor has recently opened the Mercure Ponta Delgada Azores in Ponta Delgada, enhancing its presence in Portugal with a property that blends local culture and modern sustainability.
A strategic location in the heart of Ponta Delgada
Accor’s expansion into the Azores has been marked by the launch of the Mercure Ponta Delgada Azores, situated in the restored Pensão Central building, a landmark in the city’s historic center. The hotel features 75 rooms, two outdoor pools, a spa with various wellness treatments, and meeting facilities for up to 60 guests.
From the moment guests arrive, they are immersed in the rich history of São Miguel, with elements such as vintage travel artifacts and a design that reflects the volcanic landscapes and lush tea fields of the island. According to the brand, this combination of sustainability and local flavor supports an authentic guest experience, making the hotel a true gateway to the island’s culture.
A major highlight of the property is the Bruma Bar, serving locally inspired cocktails and dishes that emphasize Azorean ingredients where guests can enjoy the local gastronomy.
Insider recommendations for an authentic Azores experience
The hotel is also dedicated to enhancing the guest experience through local insights. The team has curated a list of recommendations, such as a visit to the Porto Formoso Tea Factory, where guests can experience traditional tea brewing or participate in the annual tea harvest event.
“Mercure is deeply focused on providing an authentic and locally immersed experience for our guests. Our staff, known for their heartfelt hospitality, share insider tips that connect travelers to the true essence of the destination” said the hotel management team.
Mercure’s continued expansion in Portugal
Accor’s investment in the Mercure brand continues as it celebrates the opening of the Ponta Delgada property, marking a significant milestone for the brand’s expansion. With its 50th anniversary in 2023 and the milestone of surpassing 1,000 hotels globally in 2024, Mercure is expanding further within Iberia, now managing 16 hotels across Portugal, Spain, and Andorra.
The opening of this hotel reflects Accor’s continued growth in Portugal, bringing the total number of its properties in the country to 38, contributing to the group’s broad and diverse portfolio across Europe.
