As popular tourist destinations become overcrowded and locals express frustration with unruly visitors, travelers are increasingly seeking less conventional destinations

Oct 24, 2024

Travel industry experts suggest that younger tourists are increasingly motivated by JOMO – the joy of missing out – and away from the more familiar FOMO, or fear of missing out, as they seek out less popular or crowded destinations.

Key takeaways

  • Internet searches indicate that next year’s travelers are interested in “detour destinations” such as Reims, Brescia and Waikato, according to Expedia. Meanwhile, Booking.com predicts that Trieste, Houston and Sanya – often referred to as “China’s Hawaii” – will be popular with vacationers;
  • More than half of those surveyed by Booking.com expressed a desire to get away from the sun and avoid “tourist traps”. Expedia reports that the search for quieter, lesser-known places is prompting people to explore new destinations as they plan for 2025;
  • However, JOMO has its limits; most of Expedia’s “detour destinations” are still conveniently located near more established hotspots. For example, Reims, known for its historic cathedral where French kings were crowned, is just under 150 kilometers from Paris, and Brescia is only about an hour and a half drive from Milan.
