The Bairro Alto Hotel was honoured at the 2024 World Travel Awards as “World’s Leading Landmark Hotel”, confirming the quality and value of this pioneer five-star boutique hotel concept in Portugal. The awards were announced last night, 24 November, at the 31st edition of the World Travel Awards, held this year in Portugal on the island of Madeira. The results of these prestigious awards, internationally considered the “Oscars of tourism”, are the outcome of an online vote in which thousands of professionals from the sector took part, as well as the general public.
On the way to completing 2 decades, the luxury hotel located in the historic center of Lisbon (Portugal), was one of the first boutique hotels in the country and quickly became a contemporary classic which combines charm, bohemia and sophistication. It occupies a special place on the Portuguese hotel scene, having grown and adapted to the demands of its guests. After a major refurbishment, it reopened in 2019 and its four buildings, all dating from the 18th century, occupy an entire block and include 87 rooms (22 of which are suites), spacious common areas, a lounge, a restaurant with a terrace and unique views, a bar, a rooftop and a patisserie. Despite its larger size, the hotel retains its original design and innovative spirit, in a project designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Eduardo Souto Moura. The architecture and the hotel’s various façades are undoubtedly one of the reasons for this “World’s Leading Landmark Hotel” award, but other aspects have certainly contributed to making it this year’s finalist, such as the interior design, the graphic image, the gastronomic offer and, finally, the excellence in service.
“The hotel´s concept and identity – DNA – has remained the same over the years, along with the way we understand hospitality must be: intimate yet unintrusive.
Several aspects differentiate it from other hotels: the architecture and historic buildings, the interior design, the location, and perhaps most importantly, the personalized service and the attention given to detail.”, says the hotel’s CEO, Marta Tavares da Silva.
