Americans are looking forward to vacationing in the coming year and intend to spend significantly more on their travel plans

Dec 18, 2024

The latest ‘MMGY Portrait of American Travelers’ winter report reveals that nearly 80% of U.S. adults plan to take a vacation in the next 12 months, a 7% increase from winter 2023. These findings reflect a renewed enthusiasm for travel and a commitment to make it a priority in 2025.

Key takeaways

  • Increased travel spending and frequency: Americans are allocating more of their disposable income to travel in 2025, underscoring a shift toward prioritizing experiences. The average vacation budget has increased to $5,051, and travelers plan to take just over four trips per person per year;
  • Strengthening brand loyalty: The report highlights a notable increase in loyalty across all travel sectors. Membership in hotel loyalty programs will increase by 6% by 2023, while airlines will see an even more significant increase of 8%, highlighting the growing importance of driving repeat business;
  • Growing interest in international travel: Interest in international travel in the next six months is at its highest level since 2020. Many travelers are planning vacations between November and April, attracted by the affordability and tranquility of off-peak travel. “The low cost and less crowded nature of off-peak travel continues to appeal to American travelers,” the report states.
