
Marriott International, Inc. (Nasdaq: MAR) announced another strong year of growth in Greater China in 2024, with a record-high 161 signed deals, representing nearly 31,000 rooms, in the region – averaging at least three projects signed each week.
Starting 2025 on a strong note in Greater China, the company today also announced that it has signed an agreement with SCHotel Investment and Management Group, marking the expected return of the Design Hotels brand to Mainland China, further expanding its brand offerings in the region. Habo Hotel Shanghai, a member of Design Hotels, is anticipated to open in October 2025.
2024 was a landmark year for Marriott International in Greater China. Expanding in Tourist Destinations with a Diverse Brand Portfolio
Marriott continued to strengthen its luxury presence in Greater China, with the luxury segment showing momentum in the region. In 2024, the company solidified its presence in the luxury space with a 73% increase in the number of rooms signed in Greater China, compared to 2023. Some of these notable signings in key destinations include Shanghai (the second St. Regis Hotels & Resorts and the second EDITION Hotel), Xiamen (The Ritz-Carlton), Wenzhou (The Ritz-Carlton), Sanya (W Hotels), Hangzhou (W Hotels), and Shenzhen (The Luxury Collection and the third JW Marriott Hotel).
In 2024, the company further expanded its premium brand presence in the region by signing more than 30 agreements, representing an 88% increase in signed deals compared to 2023, including agreements that are expected to mark the company’s entry into 7 new destinations. Marriott closed the year with 285 open premium brand properties in Greater China, with 151 in the pipeline. Notably, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts celebrated multiple notable signings in 2024 in cities such as Jinan, Hengyang, and Zhengzhou. Westin Hotels & Resorts expects to bring its signature pillars of well-being to cities like Shaoxing in the coming years with agreements signed in 2024. Additionally, the flagship Marriott Hotels brand is expected to expand its footprint, bringing the wonderful hospitality brand positioning into Taicang and Qujing. French-inspired Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts expects to debut in Dali’s Erhai region in 2028. Additionally, the recently opened The Park Lane Hong Kong, Autograph Collection, which was signed in January 2024, marks the brand’s debut in the city.
In early 2024, Marriott announced a long-term cooperation agreement with leading Chinese hospitality company Delonix Group, under which the two companies are working together to grow Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio brand in Mainland China. As of end of 2024, the two parties have signed a total of eight deals, two of which have already opened (Grand New Century Hotel, Hangzhou Boao, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, and Wonderland Resort, Hangzhou Jiande, a Tribute Portfolio Resort). The parties anticipate that at least 100 properties could become part of the Tribute Portfolio brand over the coming years.
Marriott’s select brands accounted for over 75% of Marriott’s signings in Greater China in 2024, and the signed deals in this segment has increased 60% compared to 2023. Four Points by Sheraton signed new deals in Beijing Workers Stadium and Dali Erhai Lake, which is anticipated to introduce a blend of classic and modern functional design into more prime locations. Fairfield by Marriott, emphasizing the beauty of simplicity, completed signings for projects in Shenzhen Luohu, Chongqing Yubei, Hangzhou Binjiang and is slated to create a trustworthy living space. Following the opening of the AC Hotel by Marriott Chengdu North, the brand is expected to bring new hotels in Suzhou Industrial Park by the Jinji Lake and Shenzhen North Station International Business District, offering signature modern designs with a mission to deliver The Perfectly Precise Hotel™ experience.
Conversions Continue to be a Key Growth Strategy
In addition, the company’s continued strong momentum in conversions demonstrated the interest of owners and franchisees in Marriott’s diversified brand portfolio and strong system support. The highly anticipated The St. Regis Shanghai on the Bund was signed in July 2024, and opened in October, marking the brand’s 60th global property. The Mercury Garden Shenzhen Nanshan, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel, signed in the same period and opened in September, showcasing captivating design and a vibrant social atmosphere. The Shanghai Marriott Hotel Yangpu Riverside, the first Marriott Hotel converted from an existing property in Greater China, officially opened in October 2024, setting a benchmark for premium full-service hotel conversions. Additionally, the newly signed Moxy Chongqing opened in Jiefangbei CBD, the heart of Chongqing, just months after its agreement was signed at the beginning of 2024.
