As a sustainable hotel supplier serving the global hospitality industry, we’re always curious about how different destinations are embracing sustainability. This time, we’re turning our focus to Southeast Asia and particularly, the inspiring work of the Penang Green Council (PGC) and its Green Hotel Programme in Malaysia.
What is PGC? It’s a state-backed, non-profit organisation established in 2011 to lead Penang’s transition toward sustainable development.
About the Penang Green Hotel Programme
PGC’s Green Hotel Programme supports hotels in adopting eco-friendly practices and aligns with Penang’s 2030 vision to make 80% of its hotels “green.”
The initiative focuses on 4 sustainability pillars:
- Energy Efficiency: smarter energy use and renewable integration
- Water Conservation: efficient consumption and recycling
- Waste Management: reducing, reusing, and recycling
- Sustainable Procurement: sourcing eco-certified products and responsible suppliers
According to PGC’s 2024–2025 Green Hotel Survey, 97% of hotels in Penang recognise that sustainability is essential for the industry’s future. It is a clear signal of readiness and momentum within the hospitality sector.
With this growing commitment, GCSTIMES believes that this can also create meaningful opportunities for hoteliers to take the lead in sustainable hospitality. Hotels can strengthen their brand reputation through green recognition, improve operational efficiency, attract eco-conscious travellers, and collaborate with local sustainable suppliers (like us!) to meet the state’s rising environmental standards.
