Something to mull over this weekend…. 🤔

The stage is set but the agenda is not! Can you contribute?

This year’s Global Revenue Forum conference theme is “Commercial Leadership for the Next Generation”. There’s always a reason behind the theme ( we set it first, and then work out what it means later ), and this year it’s driven by the challenges we face internally – through keeping and managing our own teams, especially I would add, in the UK where hospitality has its own unique challenges. And externally, through adapting to the continuing changes in guest expectations, especially the drive for experiential travel from younger generations.

This year I’m thinking about running a breakout stream that focuses in developing leadership skills for commercial leaders in hospitality, and get people on the ground involved. Sessions that are run by revenue and commercial directors have worked well in the past, so I’m keen to revisit that.

In researching the “top-level meaning” of theme this year I’ve found out that:

💭 For the first time, four generations are working together, with a unique set of managerial challenges
💭 It takes skill and knowledge to navigate today’s multi-generational workplace
💭 Communicating to different generations requires understanding their own unique language

And here are some of the hard bits that millennial leaders face in managing across the generations:

🤷 Leading older reports: generates credibility gaps and “I’ve seen this before” pushback.
🤷 We have different feedback clocks: Gen Z wants frequent, lightweight feedback; Gen X and Boomers may see that as hand-holding.
🤷 We all run with different work ethic narratives: “Quiet quitting” GenZ vs “always on” veterans.

I’m putting together the London agenda now and talking to today’s revenue management and commercial leaders about their challenges but I can’t get to everyone. So…

… If you’re passionate about your team and this resonates with you
….If you’ve found ways to get the best from a multi-generational team
….If you’re struggling to find team members and growing from within

I’d love to hear about how you’re managing this unique environment … comments welcome!
