Why human authenticity still outranks AI as platforms influence inspiration and planning

Nov 21, 2025

Social media platforms are becoming central to how travelers find inspiration, plan trips and increasingly engage with booking. Leaders from TikTok, Reddit and YouTube said at The Phocuswright Conference that while AI-generated content is rising, human-created recommendations continue to hold the most influence. Executives noted that travelers actively seek authenticity, trust and lived experience when gathering travel guidance. They also highlighted how each platform is adapting its content strategy and user expectations as AI becomes more embedded in digital ecosystems.

Key takeaways

  • Human trust remains dominant: Executives from TikTok, Reddit and YouTube emphasized that travelers continue to value authentic, human-generated recommendations over AI content.
  • AI content has a supporting role: Panelists agreed that AI-generated videos or text can assist in certain stages of the travel journey but should not replace the first impression or core messaging from travel brands.
  • User preferences favor real experiences: TikTok reported that 67% of its users rank fellow travelers’ recommendations as their most important influence when planning trips.
  • Reddit as an AI counterpoint: Reddit sees increased usage from travelers adding “Reddit” to Google searches to access unfiltered opinions and community-driven insights that counterbalance AI-generated summaries.
  • Platform strategies are evolving: YouTube is refining how long- and short-form content works together, TikTok is focusing on demographic alignment, and Reddit is leaning into its anonymity and community expertise rather than creator-driven content.
  • Social platforms are influencing more of the booking funnel: The discussion highlighted that social media’s role now extends beyond inspiration into planning and early booking behaviors, shaping travelers’ decisions at multiple touchpoints.
