The Shelborne by Proper in Miami Beach hotel is preparing to reopen on May 1, following a $100 million renovation. The property, located on Collins Avenue, first opened in 1940 and has hosted numerous notable guests over the decades.
Proper Hospitality is managing and operating the revamped 251-room hotel, which includes suites and villas, many with ocean views. The hotel marks the Santa Monica-based luxury hotel brand’s foray into the Florida market.
“We are proud to introduce Proper Hospitality’s signature blend of luxury and design-forward hospitality to the heart of Miami Beach this spring,” said Brian De Lowe, co-founder and president of Proper Hospitality. “With The Shelborne by Proper, we’re breathing fresh life into a Miami icon, pairing timeless design with a contemporary spirit that builds community through art, dining, and wellness.”
The redesign, led by ADC Atelier, incorporates a mix of Miami Art Deco and Miami Modernism. Updates include a newly created 4,000-square-foot grand lobby bar with restored double-height windows and an 18th Street facade. Original elements, such as the hotel’s iconic façade, pool and landmark diving board, have been restored to preserve its original 1950s style and character.
Guest rooms feature warm, earthy tones and custom details like ceramic sconces and travertine floors. The hotel will also offer high-end suites, including a 1,700-square-foot two-bedroom penthouse suite with an outdoor terrace and panoramic ocean views and a two-bedroom terrace suite featuring a collection of vintage and modern sculptural accessories and a large outdoor terrace.
“The Shelborne project presented an exciting opportunity to blend timeless Art Deco elements with modern luxury,” said Aaron David Clarke, principal of ADC Atelier. “Our focus was on respecting the building’s storied past while crafting spaces that feel both inviting and contemporary for today’s guests.”
The food and beverage program is being developed in partnership with the Lowder-Tascarella team, led by Michelin-starred Chef Abram Bissell and beverage expert Christopher Lowder. Dining options will include a signature restaurant, cocktail lounge, lobby bar and café and a poolside bar and oceanfront beach club.
The hotel will also feature a 24-hour fitness center, wellness program and a beach club. A local membership program will provide access to beach and wellness amenities. Additionally, the property includes more than 30,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor event space, including a terrace and event lawn.
