
Palma de Mallorca – RIU Hotels & Resorts dedicated a total of €3,171,135 to social investment in 2024 as part of the first roll out of its Proudly Committed strategy. The company’s 104 actions with 88 strategic partners directly impacted 55,624 people and indirectly impacted 82,644 people. Childhood represented 71% of the investment, followed by Biodiversity (22%) and Local community (7%).
Childhood remains the main focus of RIU’s social investment. Research into childhood cancer is one of its key programs, with RIU having gathered almost 2 million euros in investment since 2014, as well as supporting health initiatives related to mothers and children in Latin America and education projects in Africa.
Preserving nature and biodiversity are some of the initiatives being advanced by Proudly Committed. In 2024, the chain supported projects in Mexico, the Maldives, Costa Rica, Mauritius and the Dominican Republic, aiding reef restoration, coastal reforestation and species protection in collaboration with scientific organisations.
RIU is also closely collaborating with the local communities surrounding its hotels. For example, RIU funded training, development and local culture projects in Africa and Latin America. Since 2012, it has maintained its membership of ECPAT, where it is currently a Top Member, and since 2021 it has held an agreement with the IUF to strengthen equality and labour rights in its teams.
In terms of environmental advances, the 2024 Annual Report includes a 10% reduction in its scope 1 and 2 emissions per stay in 2024, which is 61% less than in 2021. Currently, 72% of RIU’s hotels have environmental certifications, with pioneering milestones such as the zero food waste certification in all of its hotels in Mallorca and the use of renewable electricity in 76% of its hotels.
