Across the city, a number of hotels have implemented measures that reduce emissions, improve resource efficiency, and support local ecosystems. These properties illustrate the range of operational actions a hotel can take to advance sustainability.
- The Fairmont Le Château Frontenac was the first historic hotel in Canada to achieve carbon neutrality. Its initiatives include rooftop beehives that contribute to pollinator health and a strong focus on local, eco-certified sourcing.
- Hôtel Nomad Québec, the first hotel in Québec to obtain Biosphere certification, is powered entirely by renewable energy. It measures and offsets its greenhouse gas emissions for Scopes 1 and 2, with partial coverage of Scope 3.
- Hôtel Le Germain Québec uses geothermal heating and cooling combined with heat-recovery systems to reduce energy consumption. It also prioritizes locally produced goods and maintains commitments to community engagement.
- Hôtel du Vieux-Québec offsets all operational emissions through Gold Standard credits from Planetair, operates on 100% natural biogas, and maintains a rooftop garden alongside strong waste-reduction policies.
These examples demonstrate how sustainability can be embedded into hotel operations in practical and measurable ways. Which practices could be scaled or replicated by hotels and resorts elsewhere to accelerate the transition toward more responsible tourism? Share us with your thoughts.
