Over in Glen Rose, Texas, sits one of our state’s best-kept secrets. Set across 9,000 expansive acres of natural beauty, Rough Creek Lodge, Ranch and Resort offers the perfect setting for adventure, tranquility, and inspiration. Rough Creek is undergoing a massive renovation project across its 64 guest rooms, 4 exclusive cabins, and 5 opulently appointed guest homes. This fresh reimagining was spearheaded and executed primarily by women. The Great Room, restaurant, Texas Board Room are all redesigned and a private dining room has been added. Guest rooms and suites transformations are underway.
As guests are pouring in and observing a fresh new Rough Creek Lodge in its public spaces, women are at the pulse of the beloved getaway, with guides and instructors shaping a bucolic experience. In honor of National Women-Owned Business Month, Rough Creek is honored to introduce the women on its talented team, as well as their go-to designers and artists making the magic happen.
Jessica Byrn, Director of Operations — With more than 12 years at Rough Creek Lodge, Ranch and Resort, Jessica Byrn has worked her way from restaurant server to Director of Operations. Her hands-on experience and deep understanding of hospitality define her leadership approach. Beyond Rough Creek, she and her husband run two businesses that champion local youth in agriculture and rodeo, contributing over $100,000 through scholarships and community programs. A dedicated rancher and wellness advocate, Jessica promotes mindful nutrition, movement, and healthy living. Her story is one of hard work, growth, and a lasting commitment to people and community.

Jo Newby, General Contractor — Jo has over 50 years experience working in the construction industry. Since making the leap and launching her own business, she’s found her work even more rewarding, as she makes sure each of her clients are satisfied with the final product. “Giving it a woman’s touch seems to be exactly what people are looking for and love to see.“
Kara Legako, Designer — Since earning her bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from the University of Oklahoma in 2004, Kara has worked on a wide range of commercial and residential projects across Florida and Texas. In 2016, she and her sister Kate founded Kara Legako Design, specializing in hotels, restaurants, healthcare spaces, and custom homes. Kara guides clients through a collaborative process that blends their vision with her design expertise. From new builds to remodels, she creates spaces that feel personal, functional, and timeless. A frequent traveler and proud advocate for wallpaper, Kara finds inspiration in global design and everyday living.
Kate Legako, Designer — After earning her business marketing degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2007, Kate moved to Dallas to begin her career in fashion retail and styling. In 2016, she joined her sister to launch Kara Legako Design, blending her eye for fashion with a passion for residential and commercial interiors. Kate values the relationships she builds with clients and vendors, helping bring each project’s vision to life. In 2021, she expanded her expertise by becoming a licensed real estate agent. Today, she guides clients seamlessly through both the design and home-buying process.
Izzy Flamm, Professional Hunt Guide — Hailing from Selah, Washington, Izzy has called Texas home for the past four years. She felt called to guide as she often sought the opportunity to spend everyday doing what she loves, while also introducing the outdoors to people who don’t get to experience these settings often. Izzy lives by a simple mantra — “When you have a dream, you’ve got to grab it and never let go.”
Shelby Starr, Professional Hunt Guide — Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Shelby has long had an affinity for the outdoors. She began hunting at a young age, picking up shells behind the hunters. Shelby always felt a deep connection to working dogs, inspired by their drive, intelligence, and loyalty while forging unforgettable experiences in the field. “Sharing that bond with others creates not just successful hunts, but lifelong memories woven through moments of trust, instinct, and wild beauty.“
Ashley Braithwaite, Artist — A lifelong creative, Ashley has always loved making things. After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts, she spent nine years at top Dallas advertising agencies, helping brands tell their stories through social media. Through her company, AMB Studio, she’s collaborated on projects from Aspen to the Florida Keys—and now the Iredell ranch of Rough Creek. Ashley is reimagining our mural with inspiration from vintage Western movie posters, blending nostalgia with timeless appeal. Her work reflects a passion for storytelling, artistry, and thoughtful design. Braithwaite created a giant mural on the interior of The Great Room and Restaurant depicting Rough Creek’s history and landscape. https://ashleybraithwaite.com/
Laura Goodson, Artist — Laura is a Texas native whose contemporary Western paintings capture the raw beauty and emotional depth of Americana—cowboys, bandits, and outlaws textured in monochrome, with bold strokes and hard shadows that convey grit, loss, and resilience. She started painting as a way to express love and connection, transforming personal experience into richly symbolic imagery that both honors tradition and questions identity. In addition to exhibiting across Texas and Colorado, Goodson has launched her own gallery in Round Top, Texas, and collaborated with brands like Levi Strauss, Yeti, and Lucchese—her work now commanding attention in both the local art scene and broader Western culture. Guests of Rough Creek can see Goodson’s artwork throughout the dining and meeting areas of the resort, as well as in the individual guest rooms. https://lauragoodsonart.com/
