Hello ,
It’s been a while, lot’s of clients and much work has been keeping me busy and that is great. But towards the end of the year I realized I had to at least keep up the Headlines Review of the year. Due to changes in some platforms, this has taken a bit longer to do – and hopefully now I have a year to prepare for next year’s edition.
There are some improvements to the charts which are hopefully a little easier to read. The topics are shifting and so to close the decade we could name it the Direct Booking Decade, this new decade seems to be on a different path, but three weeks in is a little early to tell.
Best, Martin
Food for thought.
The Topics That Defined the Headlines
Disruption has become a topic of growing interest. Is that because Direct Bookings aren’t the solution to all our worries in hotel marketing and we’re looking for other players to come and help out or is it because hoteliers are expecting a market correction and thus looking to plan for the downturn? It is all speculation at this point but what is clear is the tone has changed and OTAs are the single biggest headline today.
The Top Brands
Airbnb was the top brand of 2018 and many expected that to be a ramp up to a 2019 IPO, but then they toned down their media work in 2019 – and I know a bit about that. In 2019 the top brands changed again and OTAs are at the top. But as mentioned previously more disruptors are making it on the list than before. So are we getting into a decade of change?
