In its latest report, “China Unleashed,” Sabre takes a deep dive into the latest travel trends and bookings from mainland China

Jun 11, 2024

The travel industry was in a state of anticipation, eagerly awaiting the return of Chinese travelers to the global tourism scene in a significant way. Despite some recovery in 2023, outbound travel from China has played a supporting role rather than taking center stage. However, as we move into 2024, this is beginning to change.

Key takeaways

  • Dramatic increase in travel: Travel from mainland China will increase by nearly 400% globally in 2024, with some destinations experiencing increases of more than 2,000%;
  • Visa-free agreements: Chinese travelers are taking advantage of reciprocal visa-free agreements with various countries, and expanding their destinations beyond those agreements;
  • Affordable airfares: Lower airfares have made travel more accessible for Chinese travelers;
  • Top growing destinations: The fastest growing destinations for Chinese travelers in 2024 include Macau, Australia, Japan, Russia and Bangladesh.
  • Luxury travel resurgence: Chinese travelers are returning to business class travel, with a growing demand for premium economy;
  • Increased airline capacity: To meet this demand, outbound airline capacity has increased by more than 3000% on some routes.
