The Hyatt Centric Zhongshan Park Shanghai has unveiled a redesign spearheaded by locally based Red Design.

The property pays homage to its historic location beside the iconic Zhongshan Park, which served as an East-meets-West playground for the rich and famous back during the 1920s. Drawing inspiration from the park’s heyday, the hotel was reimagined into a vibrant, luxurious hideaway where a Golden Age socialite might have sought respite.

The hotel’s design concept is largely influenced by haipai, a style that blends Shanghainese culture with Western influences. The interiors capture the allure of the bygone era via traditional elements, like Chinoiserie wallcoverings and lacquered furnishings, with a modern touch.

The redesigned 250-key hotel greets guests with a ground-floor tailor shop, inspired by the high-end shops surrounding Zhongshan Park. Here, wallcoverings are crafted from thousands of blue-green fabric swatches and wall displays showcase qipao (traditional Chinese dress) fabrics. A curved glass vestibule at the main entrance features abstract acrylic sculptures, one representing a suit, the other a qipao dress.

Moving up to the second floor, guests discover the main lobby, complete with a red lacquered reception desk. A bar with a VIP area and multiple dining spaces defined by different colors—red in the main dining room, blue in another, and green in the kitchen—is also situated on this level.

In keeping with the theme of old-world glamour, guestrooms are designed to make guests feel like Golden Age movie stars. Take the makeup mirror, one of the rooms’ standout elements. When closed, the desk—finished in Chanel’s iconic black and white palette—can be used as a workspace. When opened, it transforms into a makeup mirror complete with hidden compartments accented by modern Asian fabrics.

This luxurious aesthetic is further emphasized in the English mahogany paneling, mesh and metallic finishes, and cut glass light sconces, punctuated with bold doses of bright red and purple furnishings.

Contrasts define the Scenario 1555 bar

The Scenario 1555 bar is a celebration of contrasts that plays on the city’s historic bistros. The overall atmosphere is a deliberate mix of styles and eras, reflecting the melting pot of British, French, Russian, and local Chinese influences found in Shanghai.

The bar is visually split into two sections: one side boasts a sleek, ultra-modern chrome finish, while the other nods to historical legacy, as if remnants of an older bar had been left behind.
