Thrust Carbon has become the first company worldwide to have its methodologies assured to the first comprehensive carbon accounting standard for the travel industry.

The ISO 14083 standard, released last year, is a comprehensive set of rules that make carbon calculations clear, understandable, and repeatable. It also often resolves ‘disagreements’ between methodologies over chosen approaches.

It has quickly become the global benchmark standard for collecting, calculating, and reporting greenhouse gas emissions from travel and transport activities.

The European Commission has already adopted the standard for its pending CountEmissionsEU initiative.

With this assurance, Thrust Carbon is ensuring the $100bn of annual global travel spend touching its data is well-prepared for the evolving regulatory landscape.

It achieved ISO assurance for many of the methodologies it supports, including its flagship methodologies, giving clients and their end-auditors unique choice over their emissions calculations.

LRQA, a global authority in standards assurance, has “meticulously” verified and assured Thrust Carbon to ensure full compliance.

“For years, customers have been worried about which methodology is correct for their business since there has been no global standard for emissions reporting,” said Kit Aspen, founder of Thrust Carbon.

“This landmark ISO assurance puts that to rest, since it is the first third-party global standard for travel methodologies, enabling companies to use leading carbon calculations with confidence.”

Delphine Millot, SVP for sustainability & advocacy and managing director of the GBTA Foundation, said: “Consistent and accurate measurement of transport emissions is critical to help business travelers make informed travel decisions and track sustainability improvements.

“ISO 14083, as endorsed by the European Commission in its CountEmissionsEU proposal, is set to become the internationally recognized standard for transport emissions accounting across all modes of transport.

“We applaud Thrust Carbon’s efforts to become an early adopter and encourage the rest of the travel industry to follow suit to pave the way for the much-needed harmonization and comparability of the data displayed and reported.”
