Oberoi Hotels & Resorts, the Indian luxury hospitality group, is widening its reach and has marked its entry into the U.K. Grosvenor and EIH London Investments Ltd. have announced that the group will open its first Oberoi Hotel in London.
Sitting on a prominent corner at 40-46 Brook Street, The Oberoi, Mayfair will open as a 23-room luxury boutique hotel in Mayfair, showcasing Oberoi’s signature design.
Grosvenor secured planning permission for the restoration of the 33,000-square-feet Listed Building in 2022, as part of its overall South Molton development. Renovations on the hotel began in November 2023, with all phases set to be completed by 2027.
The hotel marks a pivotal moment for Oberoi’s global expansion strategy, a news report quoted The Oberoi Group managing director and CEO Vikram Oberoi as saying.
“The Oberoi, Mayfair will be a luxurious retreat that captures the essence of Mayfair and London’s dynamic spirit,” he added.
“Our partnership with Grosvenor marks an important milestone in our international growth. London has always been a key market for our guests. We are excited to bring our distinctive hospitality experience to the heart of London,” said Arjun Oberoi, executive chairman of The Oberoi Group.
Currently the West End’s largest mixed-use development, South Molton will include the hotel, new office space, residences, cafes, restaurants, retail outlets and community and leisure spaces. The development will also include a 267,000-square-feet joint venture between Grosvenor and Mitsui Fudosan UK, who will deliver two office buildings on Brook Street and Davies Streets.
JLL represented Grosvenor in the transaction, while Johnny Sandelson advised EIH London Investments Ltd.
EIH, Oberoi’s parent company, announced in September that it will be incorporating a company in the U.K., with an authorized share capital of £30 million. With The Oberoi, Mayfair, the Oberoi Group becomes the third Indian hospitality group to establish its presence in London. Indian Hotels Co. Ltd currently has two hotels under its luxury brand, Taj. In 2023, Indian origin Hinduja Group partnered with Accor to convert Winston Churchill’s Old War Office into a luxury hotel under the Raffles brand.
The Oberoi Group opened its first hotel in Shimla in northern India back in 1934. Since then, the group has expanded to own and operate 32 hotels and two luxury Nile river cruisers at present. The New Delhi-based group is present in seven countries under the luxury Oberoi and Trident brands. The group is also involved in flight catering, airport restaurants and corporate air charters.
