Equality in Tourism, an international organisation committed to advancing gender equality within the tourism industry, has announced the launch of the third edition of the Gender Equality Champion of the Year Award.

Building on the successes of previous years, the award continues to recognise and celebrate organisations that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to gender inclusivity and equality, while showcasing exceptional practices that inspire and lead the way for others.

The inaugural edition of this prestigious award was launched at ITB in 2023, setting the stage for future milestones in the tourism sector.

The 2024 awards, announced at ITB Berlin on International Women’s Day, crowned Accor Brazil’s Embrace Program in the Accommodation category for its exemplary efforts to provide shelter and vocational training for survivors of domestic abuse.

In the Travel & Destinations category,  Eternal Landscapes Mongolia was recognised for its transparent and dedicated support for the development of its female workforce.

The runners-up were NH Hotel Group, part of Minor Hotels. These “trailblazing” initiatives set a high standard for the tourism industry, showcasing the crucial role businesses play in driving gender equality.

Now entering its third year, Equality in Tourism invites tourism and hospitality organisations to apply for the award and be recognised for their contributions to creating a more equitable industry.

Applications are open for organisations that have made significant strides in advancing gender equality through their policies, workplace culture, and operations.

The 2025 winners will be announced in March during a special ceremony at ITB Berlin, the world’s leading tourism trade fair.

Dr. Stroma Cole, reader in tourism at the University of Westminster and co-director of Equality in Tourism, said: “As we approach the third edition of the Gender Equality Champion of the Year Award, it’s heartening to see the incredible work being done by organisations globally.

“This award not only celebrates their achievements but also acts as a call to action for the industry to continuously strive for a more inclusive and equitable future.”

The judging process will again be undertaken by a panel of esteemed experts in gender and tourism, who will evaluate applications based on the measurable impact of each organisation’s gender equality efforts.

The award is aligned with the UNWTO’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which seeks to empower women and girls worldwide through equitable tourism development.

Jess Brooks, founder of last year’s Travel and Destinations winner Eternal Landscapes Mongolia, reflected on the significance of the award.

She said: “Winning the award shows that even if you’re small, it’s remarkable what you can achieve. We feel rewarded for what we’ve been doing.

“The philosophy we have at the core of the business, which has driven and motivated us from day one, has been acknowledged and valued.”

Applications are now open for the 2025 edition, and interested organisations can submit entries until January 20, 2025.

More details on eligibility and the submission process can be found on the Equality in Tourism website: www.equalityintourism.org.
