Carrier onboards Apple’s ‘Find My’ feature for passengers

Passengers flying on Air New Zealand with an AirTag or other Find My network accessory in their baggage can use the Find My app to generate and share a live location link with the airline’s customer service team if their luggage is delayed or mishandled.

This means both the passenger and the airline can track missing bags via the Find My app.

Air New Zealand Chief Digital Officer Nikhil Ravishankar said the initiative complements and adds another layer of security and peace of mind to the airline’s baggage tracking feature, which was introduced in the Air NZ app in September 2023.

“Now Apple’s Share Item Location feature takes it to the next level. For those travellers who use AirTags or other Find My network accessories, this new feature means that if their bag takes an unexpected detour, they can share a location link with our team. Combined with the data from our own systems, this gives us a comprehensive view of where the bag is,” he said.

Air New Zealand’s Air NZ app screens to track lost luggage using Apple AirTags. Airline passengers can use the Air NZ app to share their AirTag location.

Using the ‘Find My’ capability and a shared location link, Air NZ’s team can see where the bag was last scanned at the airport and its recent location.

You can generate a location link directly from the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Air NZ app users also have a new option to ‘Add AirTag location to existing report’ within the ‘Delayed or Damaged Bags’ section of the app.

Once submitted, your luggage location info is shared with the Baggage Tracing team.

The team can access a dedicated webpage featuring an interactive map that displays the AirTag’s location and updates automatically whenever the AirTag’s position changes. It includes a timestamp of the most recent update.
