A Skift Research survey revealed that 46% of respondents in five countries are now less inclined to travel to the U.S., citing Donald Trump’s presidency as a key factor

Apr 24, 2025

In response to a question about why international tourism to the U.S. has declined, President Donald Trump suggested it might be due to nationalism among tourists from other countries, although he expressed doubt about this being the main reason.

Key takeaways:

  • International visits to the U.S. dropped 11.6% in March 2025 compared to the previous year.
  • Travel from Western Europe fell by 17.2%, with German tourism down 28.2%.
  • A Skift Research survey found that 46% of respondents across five countries are less likely to visit the U.S. due to Trump’s presidency, with the highest negativity in Canada (62%) and Germany (59%).
  • The top reason for avoiding U.S. travel was the political climate (63%), followed by concerns over safety, security, and trade policy.
  • Trump dismissed concerns over treatment of tourists and emphasized that the U.S. is still the “tourism capital of the world.”
  • Travel advisories from Germany and Canada warn of possible detentions, device searches, and scrutiny.
  • Trump noted that a weaker U.S. dollar might make the country more appealing to tourists due to lower costs.
