Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has signed an exclusive agreement with Soliteight Hotel Projects SA to introduce the Super 8 brand to Spain and Portugal, marking a strategic move to meet the rising demand for affordable accommodations in the Iberian region.
Strategic expansion of Super 8 in Southern Europe
Under this agreement, Soliteight will develop and open 40 Super 8 hotels in Spain and Portugal over the next decade, filling a significant gap in the local hospitality market. The Super 8 brand, known for its affordability, will cater to the growing number of budget-conscious travelers in these countries.
The first hotel is set to open in Leiria, Portugal, in the fourth quarter of 2027. Additional hotels will be developed in key locations, including Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities, and high-traffic areas such as airports and retail zones. Many of these properties will feature new construction using modular designs that emphasize efficiency and sustainability, in line with Super 8’s brand commitment.
“We’re looking forward to bringing Super 8’s signature blend of affordability, modern comfort and sustainability to these vibrant markets. By introducing a trusted brand in key destinations, we ensure travelers can enjoy great value without sacrificing quality.” – Dimitris Manikis, President, EMEA, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts
Addressing growing tourism demand
The decision to expand into Spain and Portugal is driven by the countries’ record-breaking tourism growth. In 2024, Spain welcomed 94 million international visitors, while Portugal also saw significant increases in tourism.
With this growth comes a higher demand for budget-friendly accommodations, and Super 8 aims to meet this demand by providing affordable lodging options.
“Spain and Portugal continue to lag other European markets in branded economy hotels, with a 10% gap in budget brand penetration, despite a 142% surge in RevPAR since 2019. We are delighted to partner with Wyndham as the exclusive developer for Super 8 in Iberia, addressing the need for well-branded economy hotels that offer comfort, consistency, and value for both international and domestic travelers.” – Rui Alpalhão, Chief Executive, Soliteight
