Bhutan is setting a new global standard in travel by becoming the first nation to implement a national-level crypto payment for tourism.

This new system innovation will allow travellers with Binance accounts to enjoy a completely cashless journey through Bhutan.

Developed in partnership with Binance Pay and Bhutan’s fully digital bank, DK Bank, the system offers a seamless, secure, and flexible end-to-end crypto payment experience.

More than 100 merchants across the country, even those in remote areas, are now working with Binance Pay and DK Bank, enabling everything from booking flights to buying fresh fruit from roadside vendors to be paid for digitally, ensuring a seamless experience.

The partnership marks the first time a tourism product has accepted cryptocurrency at a national level. It addresses common barriers to digital payments, such as high transaction fees and limited merchant acceptance, by offering a low transaction fee with zero gas fees and prompt settlements. Real-time notifications further ensure transparency for both merchants and visitors.

Travellers using Binance Pay can now cover almost every aspect of their Bhutan experience with supported cryptocurrencies.

This includes airline tickets, tourist visas, the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), accommodation, tour guides, monument entry, local shopping, and more, all through static or dynamic QR code payments via over 100 cryptocurrencies, including BNB, BTC, and USDC.

Known as the “Kingdom of Happiness,” Bhutan champions Gross National Happiness (GNH) over GDP, placing sustainability, cultural preservation, and societal well-being at the heart of its development.

The initiative is security assured with encrypted payments, 2FA, and real-time confirmations via the Binance app.

Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, said: “We are excited to partner with Bhutan as we not only advance the use of cryptocurrencies in travel but also set a precedent for how technology can bridge cultures and economies.

“This initiative exemplifies our commitment to innovation and our belief in a future where digital finance empowers global connectivity and enriches travel experiences.”

“This is more than a payment solution – it’s a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and convenience. It enables a seamless experience for travellers and empowers even small vendors in remote villages to participate in the tourism economy.”
