Shinta Mani Mustang showcases locally-inspired architecture and interiors, featuring handcrafted furniture, vibrant textiles, traditional motifs, and natural materials. Its design seamlessly blends cultural authenticity with contemporary luxury, emphasizing harmony with the stunning Himalayan landscape.
The interior design at Shinta Mani Mustang, located in Nepal’s Lower Mustang region, is a testament to the visionary design of Bill Bensley. This luxurious 29-suite retreat harmoniously blends traditional local aesthetics with modern comfort, set against the breath-taking backdrop of the Himalayas. The original structure made of local stone seems to grow out of the landscape and was designed by Nepalese Architect Prabal Shumsher Thapa. Prior to opening as Shinta Mani Hotel in August 2023, BENSLEY managed the refurbishment of interiors and the landscape.

Perched on the rugged mountainside, Shinta Mani Mustang is a masterpiece by visionary architect Prabal Thapa, seamlessly blending into its Himalayan surroundings.
Bensley’s approach to the interior design of Shinta Mani Mustang is deeply rooted in the local culture. Each suite features stone walls and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame panoramic views of the Nilgiri Himal peaks. The interiors are adorned with Nepalese artisan-made pillows and furniture lined with locally sourced yak fur, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Sanskrit poems etched into the bedroom walls add a poetic touch, while playful
elements including exquisite hand-woven bed runners decorated with black and white goats and handmade rugs featuring tiger motifs infuse character into the space. Warm coloured fabrics and materials were used throughout, to reflect the rich tones of the surrounding landscape.
A notable aspect of the design is the incorporation of upcycled materials. Bensley repurposed wooden chairs and tables from the former hotel and sourced local furnishings, including hand-carved wooden minibars and copper boxes for plastic-free bathroom amenities. This sustainable approach not only reduces waste but also showcases and supports local craftsmanship.

The Aara Bar, with its bright orange chairs and floor-to-ceiling windows, offers stunning views of the surrounding mountain range, making it an ideal spot for relaxation.
The communal areas are equally thoughtfully designed. The Living Room has a brick feature wall, large white sofas, and a carefully stacked pile of firewood that runs the length of the room, creating a cozy and rustic ambiance. The Aara Bar, with its bright orange chairs and floor-to-ceiling windows, offers stunning views of the surrounding mountain range, making it an ideal spot for relaxation.
The landscape design of Shinta Mani Mustang is a seamless extension of its natural surroundings. Perched on a slope above the town of Jomsom, the property is backed by an orchard of 2,000 apple and apricot trees, adding a lush contrast to the rugged mountain terrain. The use of local timber and stone in the construction ensures that the resort blends harmoniously with the environment.
Outdoor terraces with huge fire pits allow guests to admire the star-studded night sky in warmth, even as temperatures dip. The design encourages guests to engage with the landscape through various activities such as trekking, horse riding, archery, mountain biking, hiking, and yoga.

A harmonious blend of traditional local aesthetics with modern comfort, set against the breath-taking backdrop of the Himalayas.
Bensley’s design philosophy for Shinta Mani Mustang emphasizes a deep respect for the local culture. The resort’s aesthetic is inspired by traditional local architecture, featuring elements like hand-carved wooden doors adorned with Tibetan knot symbols representing the Buddha’s infinite wisdom and compassion. The artwork of the late artist Robert Powell, known for his detailed studies of the region’s vernacular architecture, is displayed throughout the property, further connecting guests to the local heritage.
The integration of local materials and craftsmanship not only supports the community but also ensures that the design remains authentic to the region. By collaborating with local artisans and incorporating traditional design elements, Bensley has created a space that honors the cultural legacy of Mustang while providing guests with a luxurious and comfortable retreat.
Shinta Mani Mustang stands as a remarkable example of how thoughtful design can create a luxurious experience that is both environmentally sustainable and culturally respectful. Bill Bensley’s meticulous attention to detail in both interior and landscape design has resulted in a retreat that offers guests an immersive connection to the natural beauty and rich heritage of Nepal’s Mustang region.
