A historic haven in Mahon where art, nature and sustainability meet to offer an authentic Menorcan experience. As featured in the Tatler January 2025 Travel Guide

Can Alberti 1740 Boutique Hotel is a cultural and hospitality gem in the historic heart of Mahon. This elegant 14-room boutique hotel, set within an 18th-century manor house, offers more than just a place to stay: it’s an ideal base for discovering the island’s cultural richness.

A soulful retreat in the heart of Mahon

Recently awarded a Michelin Key, Can Alberti has been recognised for its meticulous attention to detail, warm hospitality, and distinctive atmosphere.

Each room has been individually styled, blending original architectural features—such as its grand staircase and century-old courtyards—with timeless, understated elegance. Its rooftop terrace, overlooking Mahon’s harbour, provides the perfect setting to enjoy the Menorcan sunset with a glass of local wine.

Contemporary art in the Mediterranean

Art is woven into the fabric of Can Alberti. In 2025, the hotel will host a rich cultural programme including an exhibition from 30th May in collaboration with the Parisian gallery Amélie, Maison d’Art; a solo show by painter Jacques Rohaut from 22nd August; and a charity concert this autumn at the historic Mahon Theatre, conducted by Pejman Memarzadeh in aid of a local organisation.

Thanks to cultural initiatives like these—and the proximity to renowned venues such as the Hauser & Wirth gallery on the nearby Isla del Rey—Mahon continues to position itself as a premier artistic destination in the Mediterranean.

This year’s highlights include an exhibition launched on 10th May featuring works by Mika Rottenberg, which will be joined on 22nd June by an acclaimed show from Cindy Sherman, both on display until 26th October.

At Can Alberti, guests can immerse themselves in exclusive exhibitions without leaving the hotel, as well as attend concerts, charity auctions and artist encounters that bring contemporary creativity into conversation with the island’s heritage.

Connect with the essence of Menorca

Can Alberti invite guests to experience Menorca at a slower, more conscious pace. From its privileged location in Mahon’s old town, visitors can easily access natural landscapes and curated experiences that encourage a deeper connection with the island. These include sunset boat trips along the unspoilt coastline, ceramic workshops with local artisans, yoga sessions, and wine tastings with top Menorcan vineyards.

For archaeology enthusiasts, Menorca offers a unique cultural treasure: its Talayotic heritage, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023 under the name Menorca Talayótica, invites exploration of prehistoric settlements and megalithic monuments that tell the story of the island’s ancient past.

In addition, the emblematic Camí de Cavalls—a trail that winds over 180 kilometres of pristine coastline—allows adventurers to discover hidden coves, Mediterranean pine forests and historic lighthouses. It’s a perfect blend of nature, tradition and wellbeing for those looking to reconnect with what truly matters.

Authentic flavours of a sustainable island

Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993, Menorca has successfully preserved its natural environment and turned its culinary heritage into a model of sustainability.

During a stay at Can Alberti, guests can savour the true essence of Menorcan cuisine: Mahon cheese (PDO), sobrasada, local extra virgin olive oil, artisanal honey, fresh seafood, and traditional desserts such as pastissets and the Menorcan ensaimada.

Local wineries such as Binifadet, Torralbenc and Sa Cudia also welcome visitors for tastings and guided tours that beautifully connect flavour with the island’s culture and landscape. At Can Alberti, gastronomy becomes yet another way to fully embrace the spirit of Menorca.
