Following the launch of its Carbon Calculator, the provider of serviced accommodation, SilverDoor, is reporting a significant growth in demand across its client base for sustainability data and reveals clients plan to prioritise serviced accommodation that can deliver carbon emissions reporting.
Free to use since its launch in November 2023, SilverDoor’s Carbon Calculator now displays carbon emissions data for over 20,000 units across 27 countries worldwide.
Client demand for sustainability metrics and reporting has grown significantly over the last year, such that a significant number of its top global client base now reports they will be prioritising those accommodation providers who can provide a clearer insight into the carbon emissions of a booking as they plan future travel programmes, budgets and policies.
In line with this increased client demand for data, SilverDoor has also invested in the development of its Carbon Calculator reporting functionality to inform more sustainable accommodation bookings for corporate travel and relocation managers.
When reviewing properties, search and reporting features available to clients include:
- Specify by region and property the total number of nights across different accommodation types (studio / one-bed / two-bed) and likewise the total volume of carbon emissions resulting from those bookings and how they compare to the industry average
- Which apartments offer selected sustainability features, including bike storage, green energy, LED lightbulbs, no single use plastics and waste management and recycling facilities
- Within the reporting dashboard, clients can also select a set period to analyse the estimated total carbon footprint from stays across the SilverDoor global portfolio and their travel programme, displayed as tonnes of carbon and then broken down as percentage by country / region, as well as display the estimated emissions of their whole accommodation programme in real time by country and by month
Clients are then able to identify which locations were the costliest to their programme from a CO2e perspective and can also have greater insight into the potential savings switching from hotels to apartments within a particular location/region and what the savings might look like if colleagues elected to share two- or three-bedroom units
Compare carbon emissions for a studio / one-bed / two-bed or three-bed apartment stay with a similar hotel stay and outline the difference in CO2e and percentage of savings that can be made when choosing a serviced apartment over a hotel, in line with the compared with the equivalent Hotel Industry Averages from the Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Index for London.
Bespoke reporting can also analyse client programmes to model potential emissions savings by booking different apartment types
Display estimated emissions saved against an equivalent hotel booking and how that saving translates into real-world examples that bookers and buyers can understand for example equivalent air miles
As the first tool of its kind for the serviced apartment sector, the SilverDoor Carbon Calculator’s own algorithm uses data inputted from property partners to produce a calculated estimate of the carbon emissions produced per night of a stay.
Benchmarked against Cornell University’s Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Index, results are compared to a hotel industry average where available, to give a more comprehensive analysis across the accommodation supply chain and displayed as part of wider search results, including price and location across the SilverDoor website and online booking tool.
Siân Ellis, Sustainable Procurement Lead for said: “Unquestionably, we are prioritising carbon emissions and sustainability data as a core function of our wider travel programme and business operations planning and reporting.
“It’s now part of our goal to increase engagement with suppliers who can provide emissions data to support our own Scope 3 reporting.”
