Dutch firm Studio &Space has refurbished a time-worn house in Amsterdam, transforming it into a family home with bespoke furnishings and sophisticated finishes that evoke the feeling of a high-end hotel.

The owners, a female couple of entrepreneurs with two young children, tasked studio founder Maike Borst with modernising the 1930s home, located in the heart of Amsterdam Zuid, after moving back to the city from the countryside.

The house’s interior had not been renovated for many years, so the Studio &Space team oversaw an extensive project that brought the 275-square-metre interior up to date while retaining original features such as the bay window, stained glass and arched doorways.

“I have always admired 1930s architecture for its craftsmanship, detailing and simple geometric shapes, and this house is a beautiful example,” Borst told Dezeen.

“Just like the owners, I fell in love immediately with the iconic spiral staircase that connects the floors and defines the character of the home,” she added.

“I knew from the start that I wanted to honour and highlight the original details while designing an interior that respected the home’s heritage.”

At the same time, the programme needed to provide contemporary comforts and spaces suited to family life, including a gym, sauna, two bathrooms, four bedrooms, a walk-in closet, and a play and TV room.

To accommodate all this, Studio &Space connected the main house to a garage and a small shed at the rear of the property, which also created an internal entrance to the garage.

The original spiral staircase was extended to the attic level and a dormer window was added to accommodate the gym and sauna.

The interior scheme was informed by the clients’ love of travelling, especially to the south of France, where they often spend quality time staying in high-end hotels with friends and family.

“Rich, tactile materials such as aged brass, warm wood and expressive natural stone were combined with custom and contemporary pieces,” Borst said. “The result is a deeply personal interior that is bold yet intimate, sophisticated yet effortless.”

The kitchen, which was designed in collaboration with Amsterdam-based Eginstill, features a central island with a lacquered relief pedestal and richly patterned quartzite top that anchors the space.

Upholstered bar stools are complemented by velour-clad chairs and a curved bench in the cosy dining area. Ambient lighting and a dedicated bar with a mirrored back panel contribute to the elevated atmosphere.

The principal bedroom was designed to evoke the feel of a luxury hotel room, with natural woven wall coverings and a walk-in wardrobe crafted from aged wood.

The bathroom features natural, tactile surfaces, including an onyx countertop and slatted timber detailing. Aged brass taps and art deco-style lighting are among the more opulent details.

The children’s bedroom combines soft materials and textures to create a cosy, layered space. A custom bunk bed with a playful hideaway space was crafted from sculptural wooden relief panels based on the home’s original teak garage doors.
