Here’s why the newly reimagined Lagen Island should be at the top of your list.

As most of Europe heads into the greyest and wettest season, Palawan offers something tempting at this time of year: consistent, warm weather paired with lush green landscapes, clear and calm seas, and fewer visitors.

The rainy season ends in October, leaving the island lush and vibrant. The sea temperature remains at 28°C with excellent visibility – perfect for spotting sea turtles and coral that can only be found in this particular part of the world. Guests can head out on guided kayak trips through hidden lagoons, try their hand at windsurfing, or paddleboard across glassy waters at sunrise. It’s also the start of turtle nesting season, a particularly active time for marine and forest wildlife.

WHAT’S NEW?

Tucked within a private cove in Bacuit Bay, Lagen Island is a private island resort which will re-open in September following a year-long transformation. Surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and a protected four-hectare forest, the resort has been one of the most secluded and serene stays in El Nido – but now, it’s entering a bold new chapter. With refreshed interiors, reimagined guest experiences and a renewed focus on regenerative travel, Lagen Island is set to become one of the most exciting new openings in the Philippines this year.

The property has been thoughtfully redesigned to reflect Filipino heritage and craftsmanship in every detail, from clay bricks handmade in Olongapo to traditional textiles woven in Lake Sebu. Interiors use natural, local materials to create a sense of calm, comfort, and place, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the character and craft of the Philippines.

Guests are invited to explore the island at their own pace. The resort encourages a slower start to mornings with a paddle to nearby lagoons and snorkelling colourful reefs, or walking forest trails filled with birdsong. There are also ample opportunities to meet artisans, join community-led craft sessions, or of course, simply do nothing at all. This is a place where doing very little feels like enough.

For those curious to learn more, the resort’s brand new marine sanctuary and on-site Eco Centre offer guided nature walks, conservation talks, and marine biology sessions designed to deepen understanding of the island’s delicate ecosystems.

Lagen Island offers a winter sun escape that is not just about the weather. It’s about slowing down, connecting with nature, and immersing yourself in local culture.
