According to Québec Cité – Québec City Tourism Official Website, the destination is now a signatory to the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism and a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) — placing it among global cities working toward a more responsible tourism future.
What is the GSTC?
It is the international body that sets the global baseline standards for sustainability in travel and tourism. Rather than certifying hotels or destinations directly, GSTC accredits certification bodies that audit tourism organizations based on its globally recognized criteria.
These criteria are built around four pillars:
- A) Sustainable Management
- B) Socioeconomic Impacts
- C) Cultural Impacts
- D) Environmental Impacts
For hotels and resorts, alignment with GSTC-recognized standards translates into strong sustainability governance; respect for cultural heritage; efficient energy, water, and waste management; emissions reductions and biodiversity protection; the phase‑out of single‑use plastics; and transparent reporting.
In Québec, several properties already hold certifications such as Biosphere and Green Key, giving travelers confidence that claims are credible and internationally aligned. This commitment strengthens the path to net‑zero tourism, improves the experience for responsible travelers, and builds long‑term resilience for the tourism sector.
