Police warn Booking.com fraudsters have stolen £370,000 from 532 Britons by hacking into hotel accounts

Jan 13, 2025

Scammers send fake emails to customers with Booking.com reservations, requesting payment and credit card details. These emails come from a fraudulent account, not Booking.com. Victims have lost money, shared their card information, and may miss legitimate holidays they thought they’d already paid for, according to police.

Key takeaways

  • Police confirm that the Booking.com account was not compromised. Instead, criminals launched a phishing attack targeting hotels and accommodation providers using the platform;
  • A Booking.com spokesperson said, “We would never ask our customers to share payment details via email, chat, WhatsApp, text or phone. However, phishing attacks by criminal groups are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with fraudsters often impersonating people or brands;”
  • Adam Mercer, Deputy Head of Action Fraud, advised: “Holidaymakers who have booked through Booking.com should be on the lookout for unexpected emails or messages from hotels as their accounts may have been compromised by criminals.”
