Japanese curry is mild, hearty, and comforting, aligning with consumers’ rising interest in globally inspired comfort foods. It is growing in popularity on restaurant menus in the United States.

Compared with spicier South Asian curries, Japanese curry offers a sweeter, less intense flavor profile, making it more accessible to diverse palates. Japanese curry is also increasingly accessible in U.S. grocery stores, allowing consumers to easily recreate it at home.

According to market research firm Datassential, the presence of Japanese curry has grown on U.S. menus by 120% over the past four years. Half of the population is familiar with it, with awareness highest among Asian and millennial consumers, while 19% have tried it. Fast-casual chain Tender Greens has a Japanese chicken curry on its menu.

Click through the above gallery to learn more about Japanese curry and to see how one restaurant is using it on the menu.
