As many as 45% of Gen Z have either already used AI to plan a holiday or intend to do so this year, a new survey shows.

Whether it’s a city break, a fly and flop or an adventure getaway, AI is fast becoming the travel companion of choice for younger travellers.

The Opinium survey from Multitrip.com also revealed that of those 45% a quarter (25%) who have already used it to choose their destination, up from 20% in 2024.

Millennials are close behind at 22%, up from 18% last year, while Gen X usage has more than doubled, rising from 4% to 10%. Baby Boomers, however, show no change, remaining at just 3%.

Across all age groups, 15% of respondents have used AI to choose a holiday destination, and 31% plan to use it in the future. Over half (55%), however, say they will never use it.

Other sources of holiday inspiration include social media (36%), used by more than half of Gen Z and Millennials, and TV and movies (39%), which is used by all age groups.

There’s also increasing interest in using AI to plan itineraries, with 14% of respondents having done so (rising to 24% of Gen Z) and 30% intending to.

“AI is becoming a go-to tool for travel inspiration and planning,” said Christian Bennett of Multitrip.com.

“Younger generations, in particular, are embracing AI to discover new destinations and build more personalised trips.”

In contrast, over eight in 19 (84%) Baby Boomers (aged 60+) say they will never use AI to plan a holiday itinerary, with only 3% having done so, and just 3% planning to try it this year.

“While Baby Boomers are still hesitant, the tide is clearly turning among younger travellers,” Bennett adds.

“And as AI becomes more intuitive, accessible, and integrated into the tools we already use, adoption will only accelerate.

“Interestingly, AI tools themselves often recommend one key travel essential – insurance. Whether you’re planning with AI or through traditional means, travel insurance remains a must-have. With rising medical costs and unforeseen disruptions, it’s vital protection for modern travellers,” concludes Bennett.

Multitrip.com offers a range of policies to suit different needs and budgets.
