Two girls aged 13 and 14 have reportedly been arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with the fire which destroyed the Grade II listed Raven Hotel in Droitwich Spa.

According to reports from the BBC, the girls have been released on bail. West Mercia police said no-one was hurt and that they believed the fire was started deliberately.

The hotel had ceased trading in 2010 but was subject of redevelopment plans originally launched in 2022.

Flames started at around 16:45 and quickly engulfed the landmark building. Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service sent eight fire engines and specialist vehicles to the scene. Crews brought the blaze under control later that evening, with two engines remaining on site to damp down hotspots. No casualties were reported.

A fire investigation officer is working with West Mercia Police to establish the cause. Local residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed during the incident.

The hotel, which has stood for more than 150 years, is expected to be secured in coordination with the local authority and its owner.

The core structure dates back to the late 16th Century, incorporating timber framing, plastered walls, multiple storeys, attics, and Gothic-style casement windows. Later additions included features such as a moulded wood pediment over an altered porch.

Simon Cusack, group commander, said: “This was a challenging incident, and I want to commend the professionalism and dedication of our firefighters and partner agencies. The rapid response and teamwork ensured that the fire was quickly contained and extinguished without injury. We appreciate the public’s support and will continue to work with the local authority and business owner to secure the site.”
