There’s been a lot of buzz in the media recently claiming that France’s Loi Climat & Résilience will force all hotels to obtain eco-certification by 2026. But a closer reading of the legislation reveals a different picture.

What the law actually says

According to the official text (Loi n° 2021-1104 du 22 août 2021), the law introduces affichage environnemental—environmental labelling—for goods and services. The hospitality sector is specifically included in the five-year experimental phase designed to test and refine methodologies for such labelling.

What the law does not say

No decree currently mandates that hotels must carry an eco-label by 2026. The much-quoted deadline circulating in the media is, for now, more a projection than a binding requirement.

What this means for the hotel industry

  • Hotels are likely to face mandatory sustainability reporting and eco-labelling obligations in the near future, once decrees are issued.
  • Early adoption of eco-certifications, emissions reduction strategies, and alignment with EU sustainability directives could give operators a first-mover advantage.
  • Hospitality businesses should closely monitor upcoming regulatory decrees that will set the official timeline and scope.

The bottom line

For now, the 2026 deadline is not law, it’s speculation. But momentum is clearly building toward stricter sustainability obligations for the hospitality sector. Whether eco-certification becomes mandatory by 2026 or later, hotels that prepare early will be best positioned to comply—and to compete.
