The Falls Hotel and Spa in County Clare has announced that it has generated more than 5 million kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity through its on-site hydro-electric turbine.

The eco-focused hotel, which has been certified carbon neutral since 2021, sits on the banks of the River Inagh, where cascading waters are harnessed for power. Some 90 solar panels were recently installed as part of a longer-term plan to make the property electrically self-sufficient.

The 140-room site is among Ireland’s most recognised green hotels, having received multiple environmental awards and membership of the Burren Eco-tourism Network. The group of businesses promotes sustainable tourism in the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark, where the hotel is located.

Clare became the first county in Ireland to be awarded Global Sustainable Tourism Council Destination Certification earlier this year, in recognition of work by local authorities, businesses and communities to balance visitor growth with environmental protection.

Originally a medieval castle, the hotel’s building was rebuilt in Georgian style in the late 18th Century before being converted into a guesthouse in 1936. It now features two restaurants, a spa and banqueting facilities.

The Burren landscape, known for its 330-million-year-old limestone pavements, rare flora and thousands of archaeological sites, remains a draw for visitors. The area has also become known for artisan food producers and award-winning food trails.
