Hotel Heron, part of Aparium Hotel Group, has opened its doors in Alexandria, Virginia’s Old Town.

Steeped in a storied past, the property is an example of the city’s iconic Colonial Revival architecture. Spearheaded by DC-based architects Antunovich Associates and the interior design team at Streetsense, the restoration seeks to honor the heritage of Old Town.

Stepping into Hotel Heron

Upon arrival, a split-tier lobby features Mid-Atlantic elements with a rich palette that blends warm, colonial-style woods with blue, green, and crisp white shades. Ribbed glass and contemporary trims add texture and sheen to the rich dark woods, while handmade tiling envelops the concierge desk.

Stairs at the front desk lead to the library, designed to mirror the aesthetic of a grand Alexandria home. Custom-woven tapestries adorn the walls above the fireplace’s reclaimed mantle and bookshelves.

Incorporated into each guestroom are historical architectural details, such as velvet headboards, federal-style mirrors, and fluted glass paneling that separates the bedroom and allows natural light to flood the bathroom.

Inspired by Alexandria’s first documented potter, Henry Piercy, whose kiln once stood blocks away from Hotel Heron, the hotel’s restaurant KILN feels at home in Old Town. The interiors harness design elements like locally crafted tables and banquettes to complement the Mid-Atlantic menu.

At the heart of Hotel Heron lies Francis Hall, a cocktail bar fashioned with a dramatic tented ceiling, rich jewel tones, and burnished brass bar. Designed to feel overtly luxurious, the space boasts velvet and fringe banquettes and antique mirror accents.

Good Fortune, Alexandria’s only hotel rooftop bar, crowns Hotel Heron with 360-degree views of the city.

Furthermore, the hotel features more than 3,500 square feet of indoor meeting and event space, with additional outdoor options. The hotel’s ballroom showcases an array of art—curated in partnership with CulturalDC—that highlights works by local artists, including Stephanie Mercedes, Heron Hotel’s first artist in residency.
