The rules around AI and travel advice are the same as they are everywhere else: Generative AI can be an impressively helpful tool, but it’s not something to rely on entirely

Aug 26, 2024

There’s no doubt that AI can be useful in many ways, but it’s important to recognize its limitations. These chatbots haven’t visited the places they’re describing – they don’t know what fine dining or a cozy hideaway really is; they’re simply rephrasing information from the web, albeit in a natural-sounding way.

Key takeaways

  • AI chatbots excel at answering complex queries, such as finding activities in a city for kids within a certain budget, and provide more accurate results than a standard Google search;
  • Chatbots are useful for answering questions you’d typically ask a person, such as what a place is like at night, the best times to visit, or landmarks to explore in an afternoon;
  • The Large Language Models (LLMs) that power these chatbots don’t just copy text; they generate new content based on their training. While this allows for creative responses, it also introduces potential inaccuracies known as hallucinations.
