According to the Barclays UK Year End Consumer Spend Report, consumer spending with travel agents increased by 7.5% year on year

Jan 7, 2025

Agents experienced the highest year-on-year growth in total transactions of all sectors tracked by Barclays, with a 17.8% increase in December. This marked an acceleration from the 15.6% year-on-year growth recorded in November.

Key takeaways

  • The travel sector as a whole recorded a 4.7% year-on-year increase in spend in December, accompanied by a 3.4% increase in total transactions. This puts the growth achieved by travel agents above the broader industry average;
  • These figures highlight a positive trend for the travel industry, despite challenging economic conditions in 2024;
  • Notably, consumer card spending remained flat in December, with Barclays attributing the shift to Brits cutting back on essential spending, such as food, to prioritize spending on travel and entertainment.
