Hotel occupancy rates in the French capital are well below average as bad weather, combined with Olympic-related transport problems and price hikes, keep summer tourists away

Jul 3, 2024

With just four weeks until the Summer Olympic Games, Paris hotels are experiencing lower-than-expected demand, with occupancy rates down nearly 25% compared to previous years. Observers note that tourists may be avoiding the capital.

Key takeaways

  • Ze Hotel in Montmartre is at only 50% capacity this June, a drop from the usual 80%. Director Aldric Duval says, “The Olympic Games effect seems counter-productive as everything has become very expensive;”
  • Tourists are holding out for last-minute price drops. Despite current challenges, tourism professionals hope the Olympics will boost future bookings;
  • “Paris je t’aime,” the city’s tourism bureau, expects most Olympic visitors from July 26 to August 11 to be local or domestic.
