A recent study reveals that Booking.com users could be paying significantly more depending on the device they use to make reservations

Oct 8, 2024

An investigation by the UK’s Daily Mail found that room rates can vary by as much as 52% depending on whether a booking is made on a desktop or mobile device. This suggests that travelers looking to save money could benefit significantly by using a smartphone app instead.

Key takeaways

  • The study looked at 35 hotels listed on Booking.com in popular UK and European destinations, focusing on reservations for a family of three needing one room and a family of four needing two rooms for the night of October 31;
  • The results showed that prices were on average 16% higher per night when booked via desktop or laptop, equating to an additional £50 (€60) per booking;
  • One notable example was the Cumberland Hotel in London, where a family of four was charged £388 (€463) for two rooms booked via the Booking.com mobile app, compared to £588 (€702) when booking the same rooms via the website – a staggering 52% increase.
