What industry leaders are doing to make business travel more sustainable as it rapidly grows and is expected to reach record levels in 2024

Oct 15, 2024

Recently, KLM hosted a panel discussion on sustainable business travel at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York City. Three leaders from the hospitality industry shared their initiatives to protect the environment through innovative operational practices, capital investments, and technological advancements.

Key takeaways

  • Provide environmentally friendly choices: Consumers are increasingly looking for brands, products and experiences that prioritize sustainability. This growing trend is driving change in industries ranging from fashion to agriculture;
  • Transforming operations for sustainability: Business travelers recognize that their carbon emissions contribute to climate change. While the travel industry cannot completely eliminate this impact, panelists agreed that operational changes can help mitigate it;
  • Creating a sustainable future: The infrastructure required for business travel is costly and cannot be transformed overnight. However, companies focused on sustainability are making incremental improvements to this infrastructure over time.
