Travelers are eager to hit the road or skies, but economic concerns and inflation are widening the wealth gap

Oct 15, 2024

Compared to 2023, more travelers are opting for road trips over air travel. Sojern data shows that upscale and luxury hotel prices have risen by 1.7% and 1.4%, while economy lodging prices remain steady, reflecting higher demand for premium accommodations.

Key takeaways

  • U.S. Thanksgiving air travel is up 4% in 2024, with Orlando as the top destination;
  • While Europe’s Christmas markets attract international tourists, European travelers are increasingly booking flights to Asia (+14%), Latin America (+3%), and select non-conflict areas in the Middle East and Africa (+3%);
  • Ski tourism trends are shifting: hotel bookings are up 20% and 42% in the German and Swiss Alps, but down 9-18% in the U.S. and Canada. Japan has emerged as a top ski destination, with bookings up 417% year-over-year.
