A historic downtown Houston landmark is getting a new life as a boutique hotel. The century-old Scanlan Building will be transformed into a 140-room Canopy by Hilton, with an expected opening in summer 2027.

Hospitality management company Frontera Hotel Group has partnered with SLTX Capital to oversee operations of the hotel. SLTX Capital, the Sugar Land, Texas-based real estate firm, owns the 87,000-square-foot building.

Built in 1909 on the site of Texas’ first ‘White House,’ the Scanlan Building is known for its ornate crown molding, marble walls and the Case Maclaim mural of a boy on a bicycle. The developers plan to preserve these historic elements while adapting the space for modern hospitality.

The historic Scanlan Building will be converted into a Canopy by Hilton hotel.

SLTX Capital’s redevelopment aligns with Houston’s changing urban landscape, particularly along the pedestrian-centric Main Street Promenade.

The hotel will feature a restaurant and bar, rooftop garden, fitness center and communal spaces.

“Frontera Hotel Group is honored to be entrusted with the management of this transformative project,” said Zuhair Bheda, senior vice president and chief development officer at Frontera Hotel Group. “This hotel will serve as a bridge between Houston’s storied past and its dynamic future, offering an upscale hospitality experience tailored to both travelers and locals. The Canopy by Hilton brand is the perfect fit for this revitalization, embracing the building’s heritage while infusing it with contemporary elegance.”
