Rosewood Hotels & Resorts has opened Rosewood Miyakojima in Japan, its first in the country, with a design serving as a paean to Ryukyu culture.

This 55-room resort features four dining venues, including restaurants serving Japanese and international cuisine. Guests also have access to an infinity pool by the beach, a private pavilion for special events and wellness treatments through Rosewood’s Asaya Spa.

The resort’s design draws inspiration from the local Ryukyu culture and the island’s natural environment. Studio Piet Boon, a Netherlands-based design studio, was responsible for the resort’s architecture. The design incorporates natural materials like Ryukyu stone to help the buildings blend with the landscape.

Rooms use local materials such as Ryukyu limestone to connect the interiors with the island’s environment. The resort divides accommodations into five zones, each providing a different view of the island’s scenery. The rooms combine local architectural styles with modern comforts.

“We feel a deep connection to Japanese culture, particularly in design principles such as simplicity, balance, and harmony” said Piet Boon. “These elements were essential in shaping the property, allowing us to create a seamless blend of luxury and tranquility—one that celebrates both the local environment and our shared design values.”

For dining, NAGI blends Italian and Japanese cuisine, while MAAS, located by the ocean, specializes in fresh seafood. The poolside bar YUKUU offers drinks and light meals with a view of the ocean. Later in 2025, the resort will open CHOMA, which will focus on traditional Japanese dishes like sushi, tempura, and teppanyaki, prepared by expert chefs.

The wellness offerings at the resort focus on the Asaya Spa. Drawing on Okinawan wellness traditions, the spa offers treatments using local herbs and sea salt. Guests can also take part in martial arts lessons, learning karate from a local instructor. These activities aim to improve both physical health and mental well-being.

Families visiting Rosewood Miyakojima can enjoy the Rose Buds and Rosewood Explorers programs. These programs offer educational activities based on local traditions, such as crafting or learning about Okinawan culture. These experiences help children connect with the island’s heritage while allowing parents to relax.

Rosewood Miyakojima offers a unique opportunity to experience the culture and natural beauty of Miyakojima. With a focus on local experiences, the resort caters to travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure.
