Madrid continues to strengthen its position as a premier global destination by diversifying its tourism offer, expanding infrastructure, and capitalizing on high-impact events. With consistent growth in international arrivals, strategic investments in culture, sports, and screen tourism, and strong performance across hospitality indicators, the city reinforces its role as a dynamic, competitive, and forward-looking urban tourism hub.

Tourism performance

According to the data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), Madrid welcomed 758,096 travelers in January 2025, reflecting a 6.5% increase compared to the same month last year. Notably, international tourism saw a stronger growth rate of 8.2%, surpassing the 4.7% increase for domestic tourists. This outperformance exceeds Spain’s national average increase of 2%, further cementing Madrid’s position as a leading tourist destination.

The number of overnight stays in Madrid during January reached 1,557,615, marking a 7.8% year-on-year growth, compared to the national average increase of 2.5%. International tourism in the capital grew by 10.9%, which is also higher than the national average of 3.7%.

Hotel infrastructure

Based on the information from Hotel Occupancy Survey (EOH) by the National Statistics Institute (INE), as it is stated on the 2022 Tourism Madrid report, Madrid saw a growth in both its tourism and hotel sectors in 2022. The city welcomed over 9.2 million travelers, with international visitors making up 50.4% of the total. International visitors stayed an average of 2.5 days, contributing to €9.49 billion in spending—an increase of 204.93% year-on-year. The average daily expenditure for international travelers was €276, reflecting a 20.72% growth.

The city’s hotel infrastructure also expanded, with 809 establishments by the end of 2022, a 10% increase from the previous year. The total number of hotel beds rose to 89,365, up 2.63% from 2021. Nearly 65% of hotel rooms are in 4- and 5-star establishments, totaling 57,914 beds. This rise in both the number and quality of accommodations aligns with the increased demand for premium stays.

In terms of overnight stays, international tourists accounted for 58.03% of the 20.03 million total. The United States led as the largest international market, with 741,481 visitors (15.96%), followed by France, Italy, the…
