Integrating nature: Biophilic and sustainable design

Sustainability and wellness continue to be a central point to hotel design and in 2025, reflecting the growing importance of environmental responsibility in the hospitality industry. Designers are increasingly incorporating biophilic elements—such as indoor plants, living green walls, and natural materials—into their designs to create spaces that foster well-being. This trend aims to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, promoting relaxation and mental clarity for guests.

Deepu Mahboobani, Studio Director at Wimberly Interiors Singapore, underscores the importance of sustainability in modern hotel design, stating, “Our approach blends environmental responsibility with aesthetic integrity, focusing on longevity, repurposing, and community engagement”

As Deepu Mahboobani highlights, in practice, this means reusing materials, collaborating with local artisans, and sourcing products that minimize the environmental footprint.

Furthermore, an interesting example that showcases how sustainable design is evolving in the hotel sector, is the collaboration between Ameublement Français and OKKO Hotels. The project, which involved a co-design method, resulted in two unique room concepts, each focused on eco-design, repairability, and sustainability. The rooms incorporate locally sourced materials, like recycled fabrics, mycelium lighting, and eco-conscious design choices. This initiative highlights the growing importance of sustainability in hotel design while promoting French craftsmanship and reducing the environmental footprint of hotel operations. The project also emphasizes the need for durability in furniture to withstand the demands of a hotel environment.
