Under Canvas has opened its first location in Washington with the debut of Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge. The site marks the brand’s twelfth camp and is located on a 120-acre property in the White Salmon River Valley, 15 miles from White Salmon and about one hour from Portland.
The new camp includes safari-style canvas tents set on private decks. Tents are equipped with king beds, linens, bedside lanterns, USB charging packs, gas fireplaces, and bathrooms with hot pull-chain showers, sinks, and flushing toilets. The Stargazer Tent features a window above the bed. The Mount Hood Suite Tent consists of two tents joined by a private deck and lounge.
The camp includes a lobby tent with furniture by West Elm and art from local artists. Lounge and dining areas are designed to accommodate shared use. A yoga deck is available for yoga, stargazing, and views of Mount Hood and the valley.
“As our first Pacific Northwest location, Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge represents an exciting milestone for the brand,” said Matt Gaghen, chief executive officer of Under Canvas. “While it reflects our ongoing commitment to creating immersive outdoor experiences, this location is truly one-of-a-kind, most notably providing guests spectacular views of Mount Hood and the stunning valley floor. It offers a unique opportunity to connect guests with the stunning beauty of the Columbia River Gorge—where comfort meets adventure, and endless outdoor recreation is uniquely paired with the region’s renowned wine and culinary offerings.”
On-site staff provide recommendations and access to regional activities. Guests can hike, kayak, take guided or self-guided bike tours, or raft on the White Salmon River. Other options include visiting Hood River, tasting wine at nearby wineries, or sightseeing.
Dining options include indoor and al fresco café-style meals with grab-and-go snacks and lunches. Onsite activities include live music, yoga, kids’ programming, and nightly s’mores. Equipment from brand partners includes Lululemon yoga mats, Black Diamond hiking poles, and a Gibson guitar. Guests can shop a retail collection featuring items from Aviator Nation, Hydro Flask, Sun Bum, Pendleton, and Under Canvas apparel.
Under Canvas states that the camp follows its Mindful Approach principles to reduce environmental impact and preserve open space. The company said the camp was developed using DarkSky principles and noted it operates the world’s first DarkSky-certified resorts.
